Who is Sam Jones?
Working in health and wellness and creating a brand based on sharing nutrition, healing and physical awareness puts us in contact with some incredible people. As we all strive to bring wholeness and balance into our lives, we tend to find the support and connections we need to continue this journey. Meeting Sam Jones was one of those moments, and she was kind enough to share a little bit about her own story to keep us encouraged and entertained.
Sam, could you share with us a little about what you do?
I am a photographer and content creator for small businesses. I love what I do because it has given me time, freedom and allows me to be creative. Working for small businesses and non-profits allows me to hear people's stories and share them with the world. That is the most rewarding part of my job.
Are these stories the focus behind your Instagram presence?
Actually, I started my Instagram in order to shed light on struggling with acne and hormonal imbalances. For so long, I followed people that shared their skin journeys, but they rarely shared the details of everything they were trying, and they didn't share their setbacks or low points throughout the journey. I wanted to share all of those details!
I think it's helpful for fellow acne-sufferers to see that people have setbacks during a healing process. I know for me, I needed details. Tell me what supplement you tried, how long and how much was your dosage. Show me before and after photos of your skin after trying the tiniest diet change. All of those details help, and that was my main goal in sharing my journey, as many details as possible.
Speaking of diet, we know you’ve been trying out our different supplements for skin health. Do you have a favorite?
My favorite flavor is the Acai Berry Skin Boost. I could sip on it all day! I like how Terra Origin products blend into my beverages very easily. When I blend them, they come out super frothy, like a latte! We're talking a lot more foam than other collagen products I've tried.
Would you mind sharing a bit about your personal health journey and how that has affected your self-care?
Last year I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS, and hypothyroidism. I've had to change my diet significantly and have had to center my lifestyle around caring for my hormones. It has been exhausting but worth it. I feel like as women, we run ourselves ragged trying to do it all and our hormone health suffers from that. Trying to heal your hormones requires extensive self-care!
And how do the Terra Origin products fit into your current diet and wellness practices?
My current favorite Terra Origin product is the Matcha Probiotic Collagen Powder Peptides, and I love to start my day off with a scoop of it in my frothy Matcha latte. Just knowing that I'm also healing my gut and helping my skin stay plump is enough motivation for me to start my day like this!
What kind of advice do you like to share with your followers?
I constantly share a message of grace with my followers. It's exhausting to try to do every possible thing to heal your hormones. You can limit your diet so much, take all these supplements, restrict your lifestyle to make sure you are getting optimal rest, but if that is making you unhappy, you are doing more harm to your hormones than good.
As acne-sufferers we can obsess over our skin so much that it derails our mental health. I share with my followers how to just rest in the healing process. It's taken me so long to get to this point, but I can honestly say, the less you worry about your skin, the faster it heals!
What is your key healthy habit for wellness?
REST. Both physically and mentally. Making sure I get enough sleep and giving myself a break from self-criticism has changed my health drastically.
If you could only do one thing to change how people approach wellness, what would it be?
I would want people to approach wellness from a long-term perspective. So often we set short-term goals for our health, and once we reach those, we go back to the habits that derailed our health in the first place. If we all would take the, "slow and steady wins the race" approach, then we would be a lot more well.
Do you have a favorite recipe you could share with us?
My current favorite recipe is Egg Roll in a Bowl. It's a great way to eat a bunch of veggies at one time and is great for hormonal health.
- 1 pound of mild ground sausage
- 1 head of cabbage
- 1 cup of shredded carrots
- 1 purple onion
- 1 head of broccoli chopped in florets
- 1 green pepper chopped in julienne strips
Sauté the sausage and onion and then add in the rest of the vegetables. Add 1 tsp of rice vinegar and 1 tbsp of sesame oil. Once all the veggies are cooked, add soy sauce or a soy sauce alternative to taste. Garnish with green onions and serve over rice!
Do you have any other parting advice?
I would like to stress how important it is to invest in your health. For so long, I was terrified of the cost of my health. Not just financially but physically and emotionally as well. I realized that I didn't think I was worth the investment. Once I changed my mind about that and saw myself as worthy of reaching my wellness goals, my health changed dramatically. You are worth investing in!
