Coconut Water – Healthy Electrolytes or Sugar Overload?

Coconut has played a central role in health for many years now. At one point it was reviled as an artery clogging, cholesterol raising, fat filled danger. Now we put it in everything from the foods we eat to the products we use.  It has gained praise for being an antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral along with providing us with healthy fats. But when we think of the benefits of coconut, we tend to focus on the oil and milk. What about the natural coconut water found when you crack open the hard-outer shell? Does this carry the same miracle properties as the rest of the fruit?

Here are the top 5 reasons you should add coconut water to your superfood pantry!

1. It is filled with natural electrolytes!

In the heat of summer, our bodies sweat in order to cool us down. This depletes the natural levels of electrolytes in our cells which can hinder the natural functions of our system. Electrolytes are what send the nerve impulses to our brain, heart and lungs which is why heat stroke is so dangerous. Your cells need to replenish them in order to keep everything working inside of you.

Electrolytes are essentially salt, which is why our sweat tastes salty, but they can also be found in other compounds like potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate. Luckily for us we do not have to lick up table salt to replenish ourselves. Coconut water contains all of these essential minerals!

Many have grown accustomed to sports drinks, but often these are filled with things we don’t need like artificial coloring and high fructose corn syrup. Drinking the pure water from a young coconut will give your body what it needs without the extras.

2. It can be a hydrating snack!

Coconut water is filled with incredible nutrients that do a lot more for you body than simple rehydration. In only one cup, your body gets 10% of its daily Vitamin C, 17% of the daily recommended manganese, 2 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber and 9 grams of carbs all under 46 calories. There were also all of the minerals above: 6% RDA of calcium, 11% RDA of sodium, 15% of your magnesium and an impressive 17% of your potassium. That’s more than eating a banana!

With that much goodness in one cup, we like to treat ourselves and drink two.

3. It is a natural antioxidant!

Antioxidants and free radicals are talked about a lot, but we may be confused on what they mean. Free radicals are unstable molecules created in your cells as a response to poor diet, stress and injury.  When your body gets too many of them, it enters a state of oxidative stress which then leaves you susceptible to disease and cell damage.

We like our antioxidants because they fight back. Antioxidants are a type of molecule that can reach the free radicals and neutralize them, so they cannot keep duplicating and harming other cells. Though your body can produce many of its own antioxidants, our lives tend to oxidize the body faster than it should. We need to give our cells a little help with antioxidant rich foods, like coconut water.

4. It is nature’s medicine!

The unique combination of vitamins, minerals and nutrients in coconut water give it some powerful health boosting qualities that may be your heart’s best defense. In numerous studies, coconut water has been shown to have positive effects in lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels when drank regularly. Another study showed it can be helpful for those with high blood pressure by helping to regulate systolic blood pressure. They also discovered coconut has anti-thrombotic activity, so it may help prevent blood clots.

Protecting your heart is important, but this simple water may do even more. Studies are beginning to show the antioxidant properties in coconut water may help break down or prevent kidney stones developed due to high oxalate levels. Other studies have shown that it may also help diabetics maintain healthier blood sugar levels and keep them lower by decreasing the levels of hemoglobin A1c, offering a long-term solution.

5. It is delicious!

Something about sipping on this slightly sweet, slightly nutty tropical nectar allows our minds to wander to pristine white sand beaches and languid days spent under palm trees.

It’s incredibly versatile and can be drank alone, used to flavor water, added to smoothies and cocktails or even used for cooking. The real problem with fresh coconut water is availability and having it with you when your life is on the go.

For most of us, coconuts are not readily available year-round and they can be rather pricey if there aren’t palm trees in driving distance. If you do find a fresh coconut, there’s the matter of opening it; though some now have pre-punched holes. Where do you keep these bulky, round tree nuts? If you want it cold, then you’ll need to store them in your refrigerator. That doesn’t make coconut water very available when you’re on the go.

If we do find an all-natural, no sugar option in the cold section of the supermarket, it’s most likely going to be drank at home as is to quench our thirst.

Understanding the benefits of coconut water, Terra Origin harnessed all that goodness and added a little extra in our Organic Coconut Water Tropical Superfoods Powder. Now you can have your electrolyte nutrient power anytime, anywhere!
